The 1,500-ton press at Meleghy Automotive, referred to as the “old girl” by employees, was built in 1968. Meleghy Automotive recognized a number of age-related issues (e.g., teeth broken from the pinion shaft and cracks in the crown and press uprights), but the automotive supplier was not ready to retire its press system. Schuler Service was ready to help with a complete modernization solution.
Dr. Thomas Werle, Managing Director of Meleghy Automotive, states, “additional costs can quickly pile up once a machine is removed from everyday production.” Meleghy Automotive understood that time was of the essence to complete the extensive overhaul and chose Schuler - the manufacturer of the Müller-Weingarten machine.

The maintenance team at Meleghy Automotive actively assisted with the preparation and supervision of the overhaul. The experts from Schuler Service completed the welding work on the crown and installed the new drive components. They also replaced motors, control cabinets, wiring, and the straightening roll cassette and feed rollers on the coil system.
Schuler merged and updated various outdated controllers and added comprehensive safety measures to the machine. The team completely redesigned the visualization system for intuitive operation of the press system - making both setup and diagnostics of errors much simpler for production employees.
The “old girl” received a shining makeover since the overhaul and modernization project! “A new machine would have required a new foundation and adaptation to the dies," Dr. Werle explains. "That's why we made the correct decision in choosing a complete overhaul with Schuler - especially as the press was fundamentally healthy. The modernization project, with proper care, will ensure our press serves us well for many more years.”
